All About Wood Blinds

By: Sherry Mehm

Wood Blinds have been around for many years. Wood Blinds are a rich and warm window treatment which can add a lot of value to your home. Because they are made of real wood, they can be coordinated with your trim or cabinets that you have in your home. Wood is a great insulator too so they will help keep out the heat in the summer and the cold in the winter.

There are many different options on the slat size and colors that you have to choose from. We have 2” wood blinds, meaning the slat size is 2 inches, in painted colors or stain finishes. Our 1” & 2 ½” slats can come painted or stained too. We also offer Insignia 2” wood blinds which come in distressed finishes. A new product on the market is the 3 5/8” slat size in painted colors or stains too. Wood blinds are made from Hardwood to resist warping, cracking or splitting of the wood.

Cloth tapes are a popular option which can be added to the wood blinds. We offer the 1 ½” wide standard fabric tapes in a wide range of colors. The cloth tapes run down the front and back of the wood blinds where the route holes are so it can add an attractive look to coordinate with your room dιcor. If you do not desire the cloth tapes, a standard braided nylon string runs down through the route holes. The cloth tapes also cover the route holes adding a little more privacy and light control. If you do the cloth tapes they cannot be removed so it does make cleaning a little more of a challenge. The best way to clean them is to occasionally use a brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner.

As far as the tilt mechanism goes on the wood blinds a wand tilt control is standard on the 1” wood blinds but a cord tilt mechanism is standard on the 2”, 2 ½” & the 3 5/8” slat size wood blinds. The optional wand tilt control is available on the 2” and the 2 ½” but it is not an option on the 3 5/8” slats. The cord tilt seems to be the more durable of the 2 types of tilt mechanisms so it is recommended if possible. The wand has the possibility of breaking if it is turned to hard or stripped out but it can be replaced if broken. On the wood blinds there is a lift cord and the tilt mechanism. Normally the lift cord is on the right side of the wood blind and the tilt is on the left. In many cases they can be done in reverse at no extra charge. Both controls can be put on the same side of the blind as long as the blind is no smaller than 18” in width and 24” in width on the 3 5/8” wide wood blinds. The bottom rail of the blind is generally rectangular but on the 3 5/8” slat it is a trapezoid bottom rail making it lay nicer when rotating the blind open and closed. If you do a wand tilt it is a matching wood wand and they come in standard 24”, 36” and 48” lengths and the one you receive depends on the height of the wood blind. If your wood blind is under a 12” width a wand tilt is done in the center of the blind only.

Cutouts can be done on the wood blinds if your window is not completely rectangular. Cuts can be done out of the sides or a center cut can be done for an extra surcharge too. Multiple blinds on one headrail is an option and sometimes is required if the window is really wide. There is often an extra charge for this. The wood blinds can be done as a 2 or a 3 on 1 headrail.

The wood blinds can be done as Routless if desired instead of doing cloth tapes or the standard route holes. Routless is done where the route hole that the strings run through is notched out of the back side of the slat so that when the slats are rotated closed you do not see the route holes. This is great if you desire more privacy or if you want to block out the light that normally shines through the route holes during the day when the blinds are rotated closed.

Motorization can be done on our wood blinds too but it is a tilt only motorization. The lifting of the blind would still be done manually with the standard lift cord. In most cases this is an Infrared control only which has a remote control and it operates your wood blind from up to 50’ from the receiver eye. You can operate a number of grouped blinds together or up to 3 blinds individually. You would operate all blinds simultaneously with Select All channel. The motors and the batteries are concealed inside all head rails. These are a battery powered motorization. The minimum width for motorization is 18” and the minimum length is 12”. A remote control is ordered for an extra charge. A satellite eye can be ordered too if you have some sort of fabric valance or cornice covering the infrared eye so that the eye can read the signal. The satellite eye will extend out and around your fabric valance or cornice.

Beautiful matching wood valances come with the wood blinds too. With the 2” or 2 ½” wood blinds you have a lot of different valance choices such as the standard valance, vintage valance, crown royale or colonial valance. With the 3 5/8” wood blinds you can get a 4 ½” matching Cornice. If your wood blinds are ordered as an outside mount the valance is generally about Ύ” wider than the blind size and will have 2 1/8” side return pieces unless specified otherwise. If your wood blinds are inside mounts Ό” is usually added to the valance width. There are no side pieces to the valance if the blind is an inside mount unless requested.

There are a different number of ladder strings on the wood blinds depending on the width of your blind. This will also effect the number of cloth tapes that you have on the wood blinds too if you choose to do that option. The overall stack varies too when the wood blind is lifted all of the way up. The stack height runs from a 24” height having 5 inches of stack when lifted on a 2” wood blind up to approximately 11 inches of stack on a wood blind that is 96” in height. If you need an exact stack height for a certain length of blind feel free to call us for specific information.

All of our prices are listed on our website for each exact size and please feel free to browse the website too for a lot of extra information. Once you place an order for our wood blinds you have usually up to 24 hours to make any changes to the order. Our products are all custom made to your specifications so after that time frame the blinds will be in production.

Our wood blinds are generally backed with a limited lifetime warranty which of course does not cover normal wear and tear, improper installation or abuse. If warranty work or a wood blind needs to be replaced the blind would have to be sent back to the manufacturer. You would just need to contact us and we will gladly have that taken care of for you.

If you ever have any questions or concerns about our wood blinds or any of our products please call us at our toll free number or email us anytime. We are open 7 days a week. We also send out up to 10 free samples of the wood blinds and also the optional cloth tapes so if you need to be sure on the color you are choosing please order samples. We cannot do returns if you do not like the color.
